Russia has used both geopolitical and historical reasons to justify the attack.

The war started by Russia in Ukraine has lasted for almost six weeks. We gathered the main reasons for the Russian president Vladimir Putin has justified the attack that began on 24.2.2022.

Ukraine’s NATO planning and rapprochement with the West

Russia is strongly opposed to NATO’s eastward expansion.

Russia announced that it was disarming, demilitarizing Ukraine and weakening its defense capabilities. Ukraine has moved closer to the West, including with plans to apply for NATO membership. Russia believes it cannot allow Ukraine to slide beyond its sphere of influence.

Ukraine’s current leadership suspects Putin

At the beginning of the war, the aim was to cleanse Ukraine of “Nazis and drug addicts”.

This suggested that Russia’s goal was to change the Ukrainian administration, that is, to oust the president Volodymyr Zelenskyi and replace it with a pro-Russian leadership.

As early as 2014, Russian propaganda has claimed that the Ukrainian leadership is in the hands of the fascists. Zelenskyi is a Jew and her relatives died in a Nazi genocide perpetrated by the Nazis.

Fake accusations of bioweapons

Since the start of the war in Ukraine, Russia has presented the most special new reasons for the attack.

There is nothing new in itself in making such claims. For years, Russia has been building a distorted image of Ukraine with fake stories on television and social media.

The United States has denied the bioweapons allegations and believes Russia will use them as an excuse for its own hostilities.

There are dozens of laboratories in Ukraine that study dangerous diseases to prevent the risks they pose. The Russian attack has been a major threat to these laboratories.

In early March, the World Health Organization (WHO) called on the Ukrainian health authorities to destroy all dangerous pathogens in the laboratories.

The protection of the inhabitants of eastern Ukraine served as an excuse

Russia claims that Russian-speaking residents of eastern Ukraine were in danger.

Eastern Ukraine has been at war for eight years. More than 14,000 people had already died in the fighting before Russia launched a major attack in late February.

Russia has supported and maintained, both financially and militarily, the unilaterally declared territories of Donetsk and Luhansk in eastern Ukraine. Just before the attack, Russia recognized the independence of the regions.

Russian leadership justified (switch to another service) attack by protecting the people of eastern Ukraine. In reality, this was just an excuse to launch a large-scale attack.

The Maidan revolution is still rubbing Russia

Russia lost its partner after major demonstrations.

The war in eastern Ukraine was a continuation of the events in Maidan at the turn of the year 2013-2014. The weeks-long protests in Kiev’s main square on the Maidan led to a pro-Russian president Viktor Yanukovych separation.

After Yanukovych’s exile, Russia chose the path of violence in Ukraine. Armed soldiers called green men appeared on the Crimean peninsula. With the help of these soldiers, Russia occupied the peninsula.

The protests were driven by saturation of Yanukovych’s corrupt and authoritarian regime and harsh grips by security officials. Russia has liked (go to another service) Western countries are partly to blame for the ousting of Yanukovych and the deterioration of relations between Russia and Ukraine in general.

Ukrainians, on the other hand, see the revolution as part of the struggle to decide for themselves their future.
