“We have to shock the audience”

Production on the second season of the live-action version of One Piece is in full swing. Now Netflix has published an interview with Eiichiro Oda, who talks about why he makes life difficult for Luffy and the gang with the Grandline.

What interview question is it? In a 3:15 minute interview on YouTube, Luffy actor Iñaki Godoy asks the author of One Piece, Eiichiro Oda, a few questions.

In one of them, Godoy states that the first season on the East Blue was really stressful for him as an actor, but also for the character Luffy. Now it’s time for the Grandline and Godoy wants to know from Oda why it’s such a tough challenge: It’s hard! I’m really exhausted!

Eiichiro Oda explains that the Grandline is, after all, the most dangerous sea of all: We have to shock the audience. That’s why there are giants and of course lots of bounty hunters. This has to be a season full of new, surprising elements. That’s why it’s harder.

Luffy is the ideal child for me

What else was the interview about? The interview between the Luffy actor and the One Piece creator was recorded in South Africa. In Cape Town, where recordings for the second season of One Piece are currently being made. At the beginning, Godoy wants to know if Oda likes it there. He replies that he doesn’t want to go home anymore.

At the time of the interview, Oda is on the set of the shoot for the first time. He talks about his experiences: I was there during the filming, saw the props, the huge sets, the special effects, the making of wigs and costumes, the stunts… I saw so much and was touched by the commitment of everyone involved.

By the way, we already reported on Oda’s visit to the set: The creator of One Piece visits the set of the series on Netflix and shares pictures from the set.

Iñaki Godoy further asks how Oda conceived Luffy as a character: Luffy is the ideal child for me. When you grow up and get a job, you can’t always do what you want. When you enter society you often lose your freedom. Luffy has the heart of a child, so he does whatever he wants. This is probably what makes Luffy so appealing to adults who are active in society and children who are about to become one.

Finally, Eiichiro Oda gives the actor a tip that the more energetic he plays Luffy, the more captivating the character appears.

Giants, bounty hunters… And that’s just the beginning

What adventures does Season 2 include? There are currently no precise statements about which adventures of the Straw Hats the second live-action season will cover. Based on the details known so far and the progression of the manga or anime template, you can already expect some plot points.

After the fight with the Arlong gang in the finale of the first season, the pirate crew will end up in Loguetown, the last stop in the East Blue before heading to the dangerous Grandline. Here they meet the marine officers Smoker and Tashigi, who continue to hunt the Straw Hats until the current chapters of the manga.

This is followed by entry into the legendary ocean via Rivers Mountain. There they meet the eccentric Crocus, the whale La Boum as well as Mr. 9 and Miss Wednesday from the Baroque company. By the way, the latter is actually called Vivi and is played by Charithra Chandran. This is followed by adventures on the Grandline Islands of Whiskey Peak and Little Garden – the giant island.

Once the pirates meet Vivi, they head for adventures in Alabasta, the desert kingdom. But it is uncertain whether they will make it there in season 2. What is certain is that they will meet their ship’s doctor, Chopper. Accordingly, they will surely make it to at least Drum Island, the last stop before Alabasta.

Of course, the prerequisite for this is that the adaptation largely adheres to the original.

It’s probably still a while away from the release of the second season of the live-action adaptation of One Piece. In fact, there are now the first signs of life from the cast that indicate that production is moving forward: The live-action series for One Piece on Netflix is sending new signs of life and making fans smile
