Coder Jane Manchung Wong strikes again. She managed to use a beta version of Twitter’s upcoming edit button in the web app and took screenshots of it. And contrary to what she had advanced a few weeks ago, the messages may well be transformed with completely new content and not only modified at the margin with a simple addition or correction.
Thirty minutes to edit your tweet
To do this, it will suffice, as expected, to click on the menu materialized by the three small dots at the top right and to select the “Edit” functionality. The next step is to make the desired changes and update the tweet. But the message will show up at the end with a pencil icon and the label “modified”. By clicking on “modified”, you will access the old versions. This will force their authors to maintain a certain transparency in their communications. Twitter will therefore give the edited tweet a new identifier with a link to the old versions.
Please note that this editing feature would only be available for thirty minutes following the publication of the first tweet. What allow, however, to correct a typing error or to extinguish a nascent controversy.
Twitter finally seems to be re-downloading content (images, videos, GIFs, etc.) instead of reusing them. Jane Manchung Wong, however, points out to TechCrunch that all this was absolutely not a final version. Many changes could still occur before a rollout for Twitter Blue subscribers in the coming months, then to all users thereafter.
The pressure is great on this Edit button. Not only has it been requested for a long time by users, but in addition, its future owner Elon Musk has made it his hobbyhorse. He will surely be keen to make his mark on this feature, even if the site was initiated long before he announced his intention to buy the platform.
