The doomsday clock that predicts the end of the world has now moved ten seconds forward. Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists (you go to another service) – the clock managed by the scientists of the science publication is now 90 seconds to midnight, which is closer to the end of the world than at any other time in its history.
Developed at the beginning of the Cold War in 1947, the clock symbolizes scientists’ assessment of how close the world is to nuclear destruction or other catastrophe. Midnight means the end of the world.
According to researchers, the clock was moved forward largely, but not entirely, due to the growing threat of Russian aggression and nuclear war. Part of the reasons were, among others, the climate crisis and the violation of global norms.
