Developed at the beginning of the Cold War in 1947, the clock symbolizes scientists’ assessment of how close the world is to nuclear destruction or other catastrophe. Midnight means the end of the world.

According to researchers, the clock was moved forward largely, but not entirely, due to the growing threat of Russian aggression and nuclear war. Part of the reasons were, among others, the climate crisis and the violation of global norms.
