In Turkey, which is described as the most obese country in Europe, experts have warned about the increasing number of obesity surgeries in recent years. Turkish Bariatric Surgery Association President Prof. Dr. Mustafa Taşkın pointed out that obesity surgeries performed in places called under the stairs can result in death.
NEW GENERATION OBESITY
Prof. said that the new generation is an obese generation. Dr. Taşkın said, “Obesity rates are increasing in all countries. The new generation has become a fat generation. We have the fattest family in Europe. This is due to the fact that not all food made, eaten and drank is good food. Therefore, people gain weight because they eat irregularly, do not move well and stay away from sports. It is possible to prevent this and discipline it. But only the big administration can do this. The state also needs to support this. Associations need to support it. “These established associations must hold meetings, make decisions and notify the government, and the government must comply with this decision,” he said.
‘IF A GOOD SYSTEM IS CHOSEN, THE PATIENT DOES NOT GET FAT FOR A LONG TIME’
Explaining that obesity can cause many diseases, Mustafa Taşkın said, “Increasing obesity means shortening lifespan, increasing heart diseases, increasing intestinal disorders and decreasing human power. For him, obesity is a chronic disease. We know that it is a disease that must be treated. When we lose weight in people who have become very fat, who have remained fat for a long time, whose joints have deteriorated, whose heart has enlarged, whose liver and pancreas have deteriorated, there is no chance of all of these coming back, but some of them can. Therefore, if you want to treat obesity, it is necessary to know these concomitant dangers and treat them before they come. For this reason, surgical treatment is recommended. There are natural treatments other than surgery. There are diets and medications. There are currently drugs that have been studied and prescribed in other countries, but these drugs are very expensive and the patient cannot afford to take medication for the rest of his life. The surgical method prevents this. “If it is done well, the patient does not get fat and stays healthy for a long time,” he said.
‘PATIENTS ARE LOSING THEIR LIVES’
Noting that it is necessary to raise awareness among patients to keep them away from places under stairs, Taşkın said:
“Human beings are a little different. People who have little money or who do not know this subject very well are defrauded. People are not only defrauded with money, they are also defrauded with their health. They do it cheaply, they do the job inadequately. They have under-the-counter obesity treatments and surgeries. These surgeries bring great dangers. “Patients are losing their lives, so it is necessary to explain this to patients very well or to give very good information to people.”
