WC over for Gottfridsson

Leksand extended the winning streak beat AIK

Gottfridsson injured his left index finger in the quarter-final victory against Egypt in the Handball World Cup on Wednesday and went to the hospital after the match for X-rays.

Later in the night the news came: A fracture in the hand, cast and no more games for the next two months.

“It feels extremely heavy, but now I will do everything I can to support the team in the semi-finals,” says Gottfridsson in a press release on the national handball team’s website.

Gottfridsson, who scored early in the 26-22 victory against Egypt, appeared to grimace badly and received treatment for his left index finger. In the replays, the Swedish superstar appeared to have got his finger stuck in an opponent’s shirt and he was in a lot of pain, after which he was wrapped. However, the 30-year-old remained on the bench but did not play any more in the match.

“It’s terribly frustrating as I feel that both I and the team have done a very good tournament and I’ve dreamed of playing the WC final on home ground,” says Gottfridsson and continues:

“I’m convinced that this team, whether I’m in it or not, can beat any team in the world”.
