Daniel Ståhl wins WC gold!
After an incredible shock in the discus final tonight.
The Swede also sets a new championship record with his great throw.
On Monday evening was the Swedish hope Daniel Ståhl in search of a medal in the World Championships in Athletics. After the disappointing medal miss in the WC last year and three long years without a championship medal, the desire for revenge was great for the “Man of Steel”.
Ståhl dissatisfied
But it would be a tentative start in the discus final for Sweden. Ståhl only managed to reach 63.01 meters in the first throw and was not at all satisfied with that, while the big competitor for the WC gold got off to a brilliant start.

The reigning world champion Christian Ceh took an early lead but Ståhl would get closer with the second throw. Then came a promotion with 66.58 for the Swede and rapid advancement up the results lists.

The giant throw in the WC
The third round was another miscalculation for Ståhl, who chose not to even register the throw by actively overstepping and the disappointment was palpable. But then the big revenge would come in round four when the mighty Swede had a huge throw of 69.37 m and took over the lead in the discus final with a 10 centimeter margin to second place Ceh.

Ståhl then impressed again in the fifth round with another good throw of 67.56 m. The rivals could not answer either and the Swedish lead stood until the sixth and final round.
The finish then became a huge shocker as Ceh delivered with the knife to the throat and threw over 70 meters to take over the lead. Ståhl then got one last chance to answer and exceeded all expectations with a real monster throw and a new championship record with an incredible 71.46 m.
– There are four throwers over 68 meters in this discus final. That has never happened before, says the TV4 expert A Lennart Julin in the broadcast.
– It is the sharpest championship final ever.
