Jacob Markström did not have the best playoff game.
But Wayne Gretzky is very impressed.
– He deserves votes as the entire NHL’s MVP, says The Great One.
Jacob Markström had some incredible seasons in the Vancouver Canucks, and grew there to become one of the entire NHL’s best goalkeepers. He later moved to the Calgary Flames, where he continued to dominate, and this season he actually acted historically well.
“I was surprised”
Jacob Markström kept the most zeros of all goalkeepers in the league, and it was largely thanks to the Swede that the Flames easily made it to the playoffs. But once there, they had some problems. They advanced to the second round, after beating Dallas in the first, and once there, tough opposition awaited in the form of the Edmonton Oilers.
And then something happened to Jacob Markström. The Swede, who has been so stable and secure himself, suddenly slipped down to deplorable numbers in the series, and the Oilers could easily beat their Canadian rivals, 4-1 in matches. Markström’s play was not something that Wayne Gretzky had expected.
– I was surprised. I think Markström was a bit tired, physically, says Gretzky in the podcast Missin Curfew.
Mighty tribute
Otherwise, Wayne Gretzky is very impressed by the Swedish goalkeeper – and the tributes are huge.
– I voted for him as the top three goalkeepers this season. And for me, he could have actually gotten votes for the Hart Trophy, the prize for this year’s MVP, because he played so well, says The Great One.
At the same time, Wayne Gretzky believes that there are easier things than meeting the Edmonton Oilers, with the world’s best players on the team.
– Markström did not seem to be himself in the series against Edmonton. But at the same time, when you have players like Draisaitl, Kane and of course, McDavid, it becomes difficult for anyone. Edmonton was the better team, and they deserved to move on.
