Watch out for supermoons – occur twice in August

Double trouble in the southeast. If the clouds don’t get in the way, two supermoons will light up the August darkness this month.
– That it happens both now and then again at the end of the month is not very common, says Moa Skan, doctoral student in astrophysics.

In August, two supermoons occur in the same month. As early as Tuesday evening, the first supermoon will appear if it is not too cloudy.

It is called a supermoon when the moon is closest to Earth, 356,000 kilometers away. It is then experienced as 14 percent larger and 30 percent brighter.

– The best thing is to get to a place that is open so that you can see the horizon to the southeast, because the moon is quite far down right now. Then it’s good not to have a lot of buildings and trees in the way, says Moa Skan, PhD student in astrophysics at Stockholm University.

Best seen with an open horizon to the southeast

The next supermoon will be on August 31st.

– If you want to make it a little more exciting, you can bring binoculars or a telescope and look at the surface of the moon if you are curious about it, says Moa Skan.

The weather looks set to become unsettled with rain and clouds in large parts of the country on Tuesday.

– If you look at the weather reports, I’ll probably have to wait until the next full moon, which is at the end of August, says Moa Skan, who works in Stockholm.
