On Monday, President Sauli Niinistö will discuss regional security issues with Polish President Andrzej Duda in Warsaw.
President Sauli Niinistö is his spouse Jenni Haukion with on a visit to Poland, where they are hosted by the country’s president Andrzej Duda and his wife Agata Kornhauser-Duda.
Niinistö and Duda are scheduled to discuss bilateral relations between Poland and Finland and regional security issues. They are also expected to comment on the situation on the eastern border.
Poland and Finland have a shared experience of people trying to land through the eastern border, who are the machinations of a foreign state. In 2021, the autocratic president of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko drove thousands of people to the Polish border. Since then, the situation on the border between Belarus and Poland has remained tense.
Now the situation on the eastern border is talking in Finland, because Russia has allowed people seeking asylum with insufficient travel documents to the border crossing points. In the past, Russia has prevented people from entering the border.
The government decided to temporarily close border crossing points in South-Eastern Finland, because it considers that the aspirants endanger Finland’s national security.
President Niinistö has said that he is in favor of closing the border crossings and stated that he is skeptical that the issue could be resolved diplomatically with Russia.
