Wassbergs on the super talent: Has one more step

— He has meant a lot to me. We have a legend in the club, says Edvin Anger when he hears about Wassberg’s tribute.

The duo know each other very well because Thomas Wassberg was the one who recruited Anger from Hedemora to Jämtland’s Åsarna just over three years ago. Åsarna is a long-standing association in skiing and has previously been represented by, among others, Johan Olsson, Torgny Mogren – and of course Thomas Wassberg. Today, national team skiers Jens Burman, Moa Lundgren and William Poromaa compete for the club.

— We applied and looked a bit generally to see if there were juniors who had potential. Then Edvin’s name appeared. I actually think that it was through Larry Poromaa (former head coach in the national team and father of William Poromaa) that the move came about, says Wassberg to TT.

Wassberg behind the signing

Edvin Anger became known to the wide Swedish audience in the winter of 2022 when he took the SM gold in the sprint – a feat that no junior had managed before.

— Edvin had no special qualities that made him stand out. But he had made a couple of nice results. We contacted Larry (Poromaa) and then we arranged a meeting in Mora on a spring day. We talked a bit in general and asked if there was an interest in moving. At first he wasn’t interested, but the following winter he came to us.

TT: What did you attract?

– Nothing special. He was a junior who had great development potential, says Wassberg.

Last season, 21-year-old Anger got the chance in the World Cup. He thanked for the trust by taking two podium places in the relay and individually finishing fourth in a couple of competitions.

— He has done well, but there is one more step to take. I’m sure of it, says Wassberg.

TT: How does the contact between you look today?

— We mostly hear through the club, I’m not out at any competitions and I’m no longer involved in the club’s competition activities. Now he has to deal with and adapt to the situation as best he can.

For Edvin Anger, pre-season training continues. This week the national team was in Åre and at the beginning of August a training camp awaits in Torsby.

— It’s fun that he believes in me, which he did from the beginning when he signed me. We sometimes see each other at training camps or talk on the phone, otherwise not much. It is usually through the club that we talk, says Edvin Anger.
