Are wasps coming to spoil your picnic time with family or friends? This amazing natural repellent will allow you to keep them away in no time!
The scourge of our summer picnics, the wasp has no fear of coming into contact with humans to satisfy its insatiable appetite for sugary, fruity or fizzy snacks. But what could keep them away from your picnic basket? Amir Khan, a popular NHS GP, has shared his top tips for keeping wasps away from your outdoor lunch this summer. No need to pack chemical repellents, you’ll be surprised by this tip he revealed during a video call for ITV’s Lorraine.
“They don’t like cucumber,” revealed Dr. Amir Khan. This basic vegetable is a nightmare for wasps because “the skin tastes bitter and sour to them.” Prepare thick slices of cucumber and place them on a foil tray during your picnic. Apparently, cucumber causes a chemical reaction that is only detectable by wasps that makes them flee in no time!
Don’t have a cucumber on you? No problem. Other scents are the bane of wasps. Also according to the British GP, the smell of copper would keep wasps away. He suggested rubbing a few copper coins on your skin. Other experts recommend using basil (place a pot on the table for this) and garlic (a few cloves spread out on the napkin) to repel these pollinators. Peppermint oil is also said to be another natural repellent because of its strong smell. It is used in a few drops around potential nesting sites.
Finally, another amazing tip revealed by Amir Khan, you could almost become invisible to wasps if you wear the color red. On the contrary, we will avoid light clothes which attract them more than anything. He explained: “With whites and yellows, they are more likely to find you. If you wear dark colors, blues and blacks, they are less likely to find you”.
