According to the newspaper, the man was in the apartment to feed fish but decided to cook instead.
He himself has said that he fell asleep while cooking, and that he didn’t wake up until the fire alarm started howling.
He called 112, but by then it was already too late. When the emergency services arrived, the kitchen was fully engulfed in flames. The apartment was covered in soot and the kitchen was completely destroyed in the fire, which occurred in Malmö four years ago.
The woman who was on the lease has stated that the man looked after her residence during a time when she herself was away.
The owner of the house, the municipal company MKB, believes that the fire was caused by negligence and has tried to demand compensation. However, the man has not paid the invoice that the company sent out.
Now the district court has ruled that the man must pay the requested sum, SEK 633,000, in compensation to the property owner.
