Warrior Well, 1899 & Co. were just the beginning

Warrior Well 1899 Co were just the beginning

Netflix has been dropping one popular series after another for several months. Fantasy hits Warrior Nun, Fate: The Winx Saga and First Kill, Dark’s sequel 1899, acclaimed horror series Archive 81, and many more were stalled despite good numbers or positive reviews. The fans and those responsible for the series are stuck on cliffhangers.

Together with my colleague Jenny Jecke, I looked for the reasons and identified a handful of them. In the Moviepilot podcast stream trawl below we deepen the discussion and start with the loud accusation from fans: Why is Netflix canceling everything again?

The right question is: Why is Netflix putting so many popular Series from?

Short and sweet: Relatively speaking, Netflix sells just as much as others Streaming services or TV channels. The industry average has long been a roughly rounded 60 percent not making it past Season 1. This is also the case with Netflix.

All in all, Netflix sells a lot more, of course than others because they also produce a lot more. The industry journal Variety knows that around four times as much as the streaming giant in second place called Amazon. Of 183 series that Netflix released in 2022, only nine cancellations are known. But they hurt.

In the podcast, I discuss Netflix’s controversial cancellation course with Jenny Jecke

So the real question isn’t why Netflix is dropping everything. The question is: why does Netflix so many popular Series off again? disappointment and misunderstanding of fans and series creators are pre-programmed.

The 5 reasons why Netflix canceled your favorite series

I am currently mourning the sawed off of last year: 1899, Fate The Winx Saga, Resident Evil, Gänsehaut um midnight and Queer Eye Germany. I assumed that all of them would be extended. Now that I’ve done my research, that seems pretty naïve to me because it was largely predictable.

    1. Production costs and contracts: how much does it cost fun?

Some series cost more than others and Netflix takes a closer look at them to see if they are profitable. Series are also usually more expensive if contracts renegotiated Need to become. Stranger Things is still alive thanks solely to the unparalleled prestige the series continues to bring to Netflix.

    Netflix

    Goosebumps at midnight

And sometimes the contracts with the series creators simply expire, like with Mike Flanagan and Goose bumps at midnight. It’s going to Amazon.

    2. Streams per series: How many people are watching?

Reach the streak in the first 28 days after publication the desired streams? We already broke down the magic limit of four weeks four years ago. The same views are probably not expected from every series, but there are always expectations that must be fulfilled.

    3. New registrations: How many subscriptions does the series generate?

Netflix thinks in terms of seasons, not series. This is because the streaming service measures success in terms of new registrations, among other things. Even if a series delivers satisfactory streams, hardly anyone will sign up for it after season 2 at the latest. Either we’re already watching them or we’re not.

    Netflix

    1899

That’s a big reason why hardly any Netflix series make it past Season 3. Industry insider The Hollywood Reporter explains it here 3 tier principle.

    4. The Completion Rate: Do you also watch your series seasons come to an end?

The business magazine Forbes has identified the so-called completion rate as a criterion for Netflix extensions as the latest reason. Apparently a series has to be watched to the end by more than half of the peopleto be extended.

For example, 1899 has a 63 percent abandonment rate, according to data from third-party providers (Netflix, as always, doesn’t reveal numbers). Just under a third of the spectators made it to the finale.

    5. Netflix is in the subscription crisis and we are all feeling it

The last reason is perhaps the most important. Netflix was in the red for new registrations for the first time in early 2022. That means in a nutshell: The YOLO streaming times are over. Netflix still produces a great deal and cannot be dissuaded from the mass-produced course.

However, what is also ramped up are the cancellation criteria and that does not stop at popular series with range. Entertainment news site Collider has put Netflix’s “fall” down to earth in a major annual review.

    Netflix

    Warrior Well

Taken together, these factors explain why Netflix dropped even popular vehicles like Warrior Nun and 1899 well before their prime. However, since the company hardly publishes any figures and remains opaque, as it chose to do so, and discontinues series at the peak of their popularity shortly after publication, fan sentiment against the streaming giant is increasing.

We’re left with the sobering question that everyone has to answer for themselves: is it still worth starting new Netflix series? The answer to that will solidify this year as Netflix moves on.
