For more than 80 years, the digital travel magazine Fodor’s Travel has published travel tips and guides in various price ranges, with the help of its more than 700 local writers and travel experts.

Every year they release a “No List” of destinations you should avoid visiting during the year, with an explanation as to why.

“These places are popular for good reason – they’re amazing, exciting and culturally significant. But some of these highly sought-after tourist spots are collapsing from their own popularity,” writes Fodor’s Travel.

“A nature full of rubbish is depressing”

A common reason for this is that the domestic government tends to prioritize the tourism industry over the well-being of the residents, the site writes.

This results in unwanted tourism from the local population – and dissatisfaction from the tourists.

“Navigating cities full of tourists is frustrating, sightseeing in cities where the locals resent your presence is exasperating, and wandering through nature filled with trash is depressing,” writes Fodor’s Travel.

A huge influx of tourists risks damaging the fabric of society in several European destinations, with strained infrastructure, increased living costs and congested streets as a result.

It has therefore become increasingly common for the local population to direct their frustration and anger at the tourists – a phenomenon that was noticed in the media during the summer of 2024.

The warnings for 2025 apply to five very popular destinations, which together attract millions of visitors each year:
