In other cases, the chewing bones can lead to Fanconi syndrome, which is a rare disease.

The dog that becomes ill has problems absorbing important substances in the kidneys, and instead urinates the substances. It is common for the dog to become more thirsty and need to urinate more and more often when it becomes ill. It can also lose weight and become dehydrated.

If left untreated, Fanconi syndrome can eventually lead to kidney failure.
