Warnings for avalanche danger in the mountains

For the southern Jämtlandsfjällen, the risk has increased for several reasons, writes the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency’s website Avalanche Forecasts.

“On the one hand, the loose surface snow is moved by the wind to lee slopes and forms sensitive drift snow flakes. If a drift snow avalanche starts, there is also a great risk that it will trigger an even larger avalanche in deeper, weak layers,” it says, among other things.

“Avoid steep terrain”

Those staying in the area are asked to avoid steep terrain in the lee on Sunday and to check which directions slopes have.

Significant avalanche danger is the third level on a five-point scale.

For western Härjedalsfjällen, there is a warning that drifts of snow increase the risk of avalanches on steep slopes. There is an “imminent risk” that expectedly unstable drift snowpacks that form could turn into avalanches that then trigger larger avalanches in deeper, weak snow layers.

As long as the warnings are valid

“But it is possible to start large avalanches even where drift snow has not settled. Our advice is therefore to avoid steep east and north slopes during Sunday,” the text reads.

The warnings are currently in effect until 6pm on Sunday.
