Warning came after the Ministry of Healths West Nile Virus

West Nile virus, which was first seen in Turkey in 2010 and last caused an epidemic in 2019, has started to be seen again. The Ministry of Health announced that the virus, which is transmitted by “Culex” type mosquitoes and causes West Nile fever, was detected in 6 people in 2024. A ‘West Nile virus’ warning was issued by the Samsun Provincial Health Directorate.

A VIRAL DISEASE

The Provincial Health Directorate shared the following statements on its official social media account:

“The disease is generally seasonal, occurring throughout the summer and early fall. It has been seen in our country since 2010. West Nile virus infection is a viral disease transmitted through the bite of mosquitoes carrying the virus.

IT IS COMMON IN SOME COUNTRIES

The disease is common in Africa, Europe, the Middle East, North America and Western Asia. The disease is not transmitted directly from person to person. People living in or traveling to areas where the disease is seen should be careful about the spread of the disease. The basic approach to protection from the disease is to protect yourself from mosquito bites.

Those who will travel to countries where the disease is seen or endemic areas must comply with the ministry’s travel instructions. Approximately 80 percent of people infected with the virus do not show any symptoms. Approximately 20 percent experience fever, headache, muscle pain, weakness, loss of appetite, swollen lymph nodes, nausea, vomiting, and skin rash. Recovery is expected in approximately 1 week. (İHA)
