Warmer weather on the way – after the cold record

Warmer weather on the way after the cold record

After a lot of snow and many sub-zero temperatures, a change of weather awaits with milder temperatures and rain.

– It will be considerably less bitterly cold, says meteorologist Lasse Rydqvist.

The last few weeks have seen a lot of snowfall and a number of places have reached their coldest temperature since 2010. Including Särna in Dalarna, which during the night to Wednesday measured -31.9 degrees.

Uppsala also had its coldest December morning in 13 years with -22.1 degrees on Tuesday.

Prolonged and occasionally heavy snowfalls produced unusually large snow depths early, mainly in southern Norrland’s interior, and at the end of November the snow also fell over large parts of Götaland.

Warmer winds

But according to meteorologist Lasse Rydqvist at Klart, the Siberian winds will blow away, and warmer winds will move in over Sweden during the week.

– During Thursday, there will be more rain on the East coast, on Öland and Gotland, he says.

In the coming days, the snow will continue to fall over Svealand and Norrland, but already during Thursday the temperatures will be milder there as well.

– You can expect that it will be around zero degrees in the Stockholm area, but the rain will not move in until later in the week, he says.

Snow left until Christmas

However, he says that the warming is temporary, and does not think that all the snow will melt away before Christmas.

– You have to remember that there is quite a lot of snow, at least further north, so it will take a lot for it to melt away. But in Götaland you can probably expect that there won’t be much snow left, he says.

Can be slippery

During weather changes like these, he believes that it is important to be extra careful if you are going out in traffic.

– If it’s around zero, you can think about whether you’re going out in traffic during the morning and evening when you can get slippery roads, he says.

According to Linus Karlsson, meteorologist at SMHI, it does not appear that any warnings will be issued at the moment.

– But having said that, you still need to be careful. The road surfaces and ground are quite cooled so it can be slippery when it rains, especially in the southern parts, he says.
