Russian ultimatum in Mariupol

Russia has given the Ukrainians still holding out in Mariupol seven hours to leave the city. In a message on Telegram, The Russian Ministry of Defense has demanded this Sunday the surrender of Mariupol -besieged for weeks and where Moscow claims to control its entire urban area- and has offered the Ukrainian forces to surrender as of 6:00 a.m. in Moscow (5:00 a.m. in Madrid) and for seven hours in exchange for not shooting those who surrender. “Those who lay down their arms will save their lives. It is their only chance,” the Kremlin has said.

Just before that message, the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky has accused Russia of “deliberately destroying anyone who is” in Mariupol, where the situation, he said, “is simply inhumane”. Zelenski has warned that the “elimination” of the last military resistance in the port city “would put an end to any peace negotiations.”
