War in Ukraine: Russia jams GPS signal

War in Ukraine Russia jams GPS signal

Russia continues its war hybrid and tries by all means to take the advantage over the Ukrainian defenders. In an interview given to the American channel NBCGeneral David Thompson, Vice Chief of the U.S. Space Forceaccuses the Russian army of now attacking the positioning system Global American GPS.

According to the general, Russia deployed ground jammers to block the signal in the country. Such a tactic could disrupt the organization of the Ukrainian army as well as the deployment of certain weapons and in particular the drone. However, the attack would particularly target the American system (Navstar). Thus, equipment that uses the system European GPS (Galileo), Russian (Glonass) or Chinese (Beidou) should not be affected.

The jamming already used at the Finnish border

This news, however, is not a big surprise. The Ukrainian army had already discovered part of a Krasukha-4 system on the outskirts of Kyiv, a Russian war device capable of jamming signals over a radius of 300 kilometers.

This is not the first time that Russia has resorted to jamming since the start of the war. Finland had reported in early March that the GPS signal was jammed along its eastern border with Russia, as well as when flying over the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad. Elon Musk had also published a tweet in which he indicated that the signal of his satellite Internet service star link was garbled around conflict areas, but the issue was resolved with a simple update.
