A big-league team recently lent some support to the Community Living Wallaceburg Wolves.
The local baseball league received support through the Challenger Baseball program, which is run by the Toronto Blue Jays Care Foundation, Little League Canada and Baseball Canada.
The program includes adaptive equipment, T-shirts, merchandise for players and a variety of coaching tools to support the athletes, a news release from Community Living Wallaceburg said.
The Jays Care Foundation uses baseball as a tool to teach skills such as teamwork, building self-esteem and developing confidence to try new challenges. As well, the Challenger Baseball program promotes baseball as a way to have fun and stay fit.
The Wallaceburg Wolves had 48 athletes come out regularly this season.
“Individuals connected to Community Living Wallaceburg and others in our community had the opportunity to get back into the swing of baseball after a tough few years off due to the pandemic,” coach Jayna Dantas, fund development summer student at Community Living Wallaceburg, said in the release.
“I have really enjoyed watching all the athletes step out of their comfort zone, have great fun and get active … and we plan to continue accessing this tremendous resource for years to come.”
The Wolves played for more than 12 years under coach Aaron VanDorsselaer, who died last year.
The news release said the Challenger Baseball program helps, in part, to continue his legacy.
