The 2024 Vuelta a España is the 79th edition of the Vuelta a España cycling race and takes place from 17 August to 8 September 2024 between Lisbon, Portugal and Madrid. Primoz Roglic is the big favorite of this edition to save his season. Aleksandr Vlasov, Daniel Felipe Martinez and Florian Lipowitz could take on the role of leader at Red Bull – BORA hansgrohe if, by chance, the Slovenian was not in good enough shape. Joao Almeida4th in the last Tour de France, and Adam Yates are also expected. Richard Carapaz (EF Education EasyPost), the recent best climber of the Tour, could aim for the general classification, as could Antonio Tiberi (Bahrain – Victorious), 5th in the Giro last May, and Ben O’Connor.

17:24 – Urko Berrade wins!

Third victory for the Kern Pharma team with Urko Berrade! The guest team on this Vuelta managed perfectly throughout the day with three riders in the breakaway. Behind, it was attacked in the group of favorites, and Mikel Landa completely unscrewed in the puerto Herrera. He never managed to get back and lost almost four minutes in the general classification. 17:21 – Urko Berrade escapes!

The Basque from the Kern Pharma team came out of the breakaway and has a lead of around ten seconds with two kilometres to go.

16:45 – Mikel Landa at 1’30!

The Spaniard was caught out by Richard Carapaz’s attacks in Puerto Herrera, and found himself riding alone in a group of teammates. The delay could be significant.

16:29 – The EF-Education offensive

Richard Carapaz’s team accelerates and blows up the peloton 45 kilometers from the finish! The Ecuadorian attacks and only the main riders of the general classification remain. David Gaudu hangs on among the favorites while Mikel Landa is dropped.

16:17 – The beginning of the ascent of Puerto Herrera

The breakaways, grouped together again at 32, begin the first slope of Puerto Herrera while the peloton is now more than ten minutes behind.

15:38 – Three riders take off

Stefan Küng (Groupama – FDJ), Mathias Vacek (Lid l- Trek) and Mauro Schmid (Jayco – Alula) have taken a few lengths ahead of the breakaway that still has 37 members. They have a 50-second lead over this group and a seven-minute lead over the peloton. Everything should be decided in the ascent of Puerto Herrera.

It’s been going very fast since the start of this 18th stage with an average of almost 50 km/h, and a group of 42 riders has taken a two and a half minute lead over the peloton, with Vlasov, Kruijswijk and Marc Soler present in particular.

13:30 – Attacks on the favorites?

While some nice percentages are expected throughout this 18th stage, there seems to be a lack of long climbs in this 18th stage to allow the favorites to make a difference. But the five small seconds gap between O’Connor and Roglic for the general lead could give the Slovenian some ideas.
