Vote turnout rises in Haldimand County

Voter turnout in the Haldimand County 2022 municipal election increased slightly from 2018, figures provided by the county say.

The voter turnout was 36.57 per cent in 2022, up from 35.57 per cent four years ago. Advanced voting more than tripled to 18.27 percent with 6,074 people voting online and another 1,394 voting prior to the Oct. 24 election day.

Haldimand County clerk Evelyn Eichenbaum on Wednesday released the official results of its 2022 municipal election.

Shelley Ann Bentley was elected mayor with 4,760 votes followed by Jake Vandendool with 4,594. Incumbent Ken Hewitt received 3,700 votes while Dick Passmore received 1,444 and Jennifer Gilmour received 334.

Natalie Stam received 1,899 votes – the most of any candidate vying for a seat on council – and was elected to represent Ward 4. She defeated incumbent Tony Dalimonte who got 997 votes.

Ward 2 will be represented by John Metcalfe, who received 1,502 votes; Ward 3 will be represented by Dan Lawrence (1,731 votes).

Rob Shirton was elected to Ward 5 with 925 votes while Patrick O’Neill captured Ward 6 with 1,003 votes.

Lisa Passmore (6,267) and Brian Doyle (6,228) were elected to the two English Public School Board Trustee positions available.

Dorothee Petit-Pas was elected to the one French Language Separate School Board Trustee position receiving 20 of the 30 votes cast.
