The recall concerns the fact that the cars’ right rear turn signals can suddenly stop working.
A total of 17,409 examples of the Volvo XC40 built between October 13 and December 20, 2023 are affected.

Detects a faulty short circuit
Volvo first became aware of the problem in November 2023, after receiving a report from customers in the US about problems with the left rear turn signal.
The fault should not be in the rear light itself, but rather in the car’s computer system, which incorrectly detects a short circuit in the lamp unit.
When this happens, the driver is informed that the turn signals are not working by a message in the instrument cluster.

Volvo installs new software
At present, the fault has only been found on cars in the USA, and the recall thus only applies to that market and is run by the American authority NHTSA.
To fix the problems, the cars must be fitted with new software for the central control unit. The Volvo XC40 Recharge, which is the electric version of the car, is not affected by the problems.
No reports of similar faults on examples of the Volvo XC40 in Sweden or the rest of Europe have been reported, and there are currently no plans to recall cars in these markets.
