The city, in partnership with the Neighborhood Alliance of Brantford, is putting out a call for volunteers for the Flood Hero and Snow Buddy programs. Both ask for a commitment of one to three hours a week.

“There is an overwhelming need for community volunteers each winter season,” said Lori-Dawn Cavin, the city’s manager of community recreation and events. “It’s through the generous support of local volunteers that we are able to operate the neighborhood rinks, as well as support those in need when the snow falls.”

Flood Hero volunteers help create and maintain about 20 outdoor rinks in neighborhoods throughout Brantford. They are responsible for making ice, flooding the rinks, clearing snow, conducting inspections and for park cleanliness.

Their help, said Cavin, is “invaluable in keeping our rinks ready for winter fun.”

Snow Buddy volunteers help neighbors in need to shovel snow from sidewalks, crosswalks and driveways.

More than 500 residents have requested Snow Buddy support this year and Cavin said volunteers are desperately needed.

Those requesting assistance must be 65 years of age or older, or have a disability that prohibits them from safely clearing snow. High school community service hours may be applicable. References are available upon request for those who have volunteered.

Volunteers can apply to either program by emailing [email protected] or calling 519-759-4150, ext. 5070.
