For Remco Reiding, director of the Soviet Field of Honor Foundation, it is not the first time that he has been at such an emotional moment. In recent years, he has been able to provide clarity to dozens of families after years of uncertainty. “It’s always very emotional because they’ve been looking forward to it for a long time,” he explains. “Decades of missing persons have preceded this, it has really been an open wound in the family. They come more than 6000 kilometers from here, today is a really special day for them.”
