Volkswagen’s solid state battery could revolutionize electric cars

Volkswagens solid state battery could revolutionize electric cars

Solid state batteries must be superior to the batteries used in today’s electric cars, among other things by being safer and lasting better, as well as offering faster charging and higher energy density.

Although the technology has been talked about for many years, it has not yet reached the market.

Now a prototype battery from QuantumScape, in which both Volkswagen and BMW are part owners, has been tested by Volkswagen’s battery lab PowerCo with impressive results.

Impressive test results

PowerCo states that the prototype exceeds the requirements set, and that it performs particularly well when it comes to degradation of the battery cells.

The battery has been tested through 1,000 charge cycles over a period of several months, corresponding to around 50 miles of driving in an electric car with a range of between 50 and 60 miles.

After the test, the battery still had a whopping 95 percent of its original capacity left.

Sees a lot of potential

PowerCo is very enthusiastic about the result, and sees a lot of potential in the solid state technology.

– These are very encouraging results that impressively underline the potential of the solid state cell. The final result of this development process could be a battery cell that enables long ranges, can be charged super fast and practically does not age, says Frank Blome, CEO of PowerCo.
