The car manufacturer Volkswagen is considering closing at least three factories in Germany, laying off tens of thousands of employees and permanently reducing the operations of the remaining production facilities, the company’s workplace council informs.
– The management takes all of this completely seriously. This is not sabre-rattling in a round of collective bargaining, the head of Volkswagen’s works council Daniela Cavallo told the company’s employees in Wolfsburg.
According to the Workplace Council, the company has also proposed a 10 percent cut in employee wages.
The workplace council is a special feature of German working life.
The Finnish Ministry of Foreign Affairs says in his reportthat the German labor law guarantees a private company of five people or more the right to establish a workplace council (Betriebsrat). It has the right to information regarding personnel and organizational changes and participates in decision-making on working time and salary issues.
