Earlier this week, the authority warned of an eruption after thousands of earthquakes were registered in the area around the capital.
The quake started on Tuesday afternoon under the volcano Fagradalsfjäll on the Reykjanes Peninsula, about 30 kilometers from Reykjavik. The volcano has had several eruptions in the last two years which have attracted hundreds of thousands of visitors.
