[EN VIDÉO] Interview 2/5: what is a food?
The term food is a neologism created by the food industry, designating a food that promises health benefits. We interviewed Béatrice de Reynal, nutritionist, to tell us about the advertised benefits and the regulations regarding these foods.

In France, about 80% of the population does not have enough vitamin D, a molecule important for bone health but also forimmunity. The elderly are particularly at risk for vitamin D deficiency, especially since their needs are great. Vitamin D is made by the body when exposed to Sun. This is why the risk of deficit is greater in winter. Food can also provide vitamin D, but in small quantities; vitamin D is found in particular in Pisces fatty like sardines, herrings, troutanchovies salmon

Vitamin D screening and supplementation

The best way to tell if you are low on vitamin D is to take a dosage blood in an analysis laboratory. In the Hauts-de-France, a medical biology laboratory, in partnership with the Institut Pasteur de Lille, is organizing a free screening for vitamin D deficiency from February 19 to March 3, 2018.

If your dosage indicates a deficiency in vitamin D, your doctor may prescribe vitamin D supplements, with reimbursement possible. Formulations are also freely available for sale. Vitamin D is often included in multivitamin cocktails. Ask your doctor or pharmacist.
