Visually powerful war epic based on true events, which still looks more unrealistic than a Lord of the Rings film

In 2006, the ancient city-state of Sparta suddenly got a lot of new fans. This was not due to hype about ancient Greek texts, but rather Zack Snyder’s visually stunning action war film 300, in which 300 Spartans cut their way through a gigantic army of millions of opponents. Today the sequel 300: Rise Of An Empire is on TV.

On TV: Action hit with a true story and Lord of the Rings realism

In the fifth century BC, the powerful Persian King Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro) seizes power and, thanks to his gigantic army, subjugates one state after another. Themistocles (Sullivan Stapleton) from the Greek city-state of Athens tries to defeat the invaders in a sea battle.

Like its predecessor, 300: Rise Of An Empire is based on true events, in this case the naval battle of Artemision. However, its imagery is more reminiscent of the beginning of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring than of a meticulously researched historical film. Neither 300 nor 300: Rise of an Empire care about realism. As in the first film, the opulent fight scenes are extremely action-packed.

When is 300: Rise Of An Empire on TV?

300 runs in the Night from today, Sunday, October 15, 2023, to Monday at 1:10 a.m. on TV. If you don’t have time, you can catch up on the film at 4:15 a.m. In addition to Santoro and Stapleton, Eva Green (Penny Dreadful) can be seen in front of the camera.
