Wicked sheds new light on the fantasy masterpiece The Wizard of Oz

The template for the fantasy two-parter Wicked is the novel of the same name by Gregory Maguire and the stage play from 2003, which, according to BroadwayWorld, is still on Broadway today over 1.6 billion dollars was able to gross and is therefore enthroned behind the long-running hit The Lion King in second place among the most successful musicals of all time.

That’s what Wicked is about: We all know the story of Dorothy Gale from Kansas, who ends up in the magical land of Oz and dances down the yellow brick path with the Scarecrow, Tin Man and Lion. Wicked, however, begins long before this fantasy adventure and retrospectively illuminates the stories of the young witches Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) and G(a)linda (Ariana Grande), whose paths cross at the magical university of Shiz. One day they will become embodiments of good and evil.
