Sweden’s central museums are starting to recover after the pandemic. According to new statistics from the Agency for Cultural Analysis, most museums more than doubled their visitor numbers in 2022, although it is still some way from pre-pandemic levels.

“It is clear that there has been a recovery. Last year there was more variation in how the central museums fared. Some recovered, but some continued to go backwards. This year it is going up for everyone,” says statistician Erik Vestin in a press release.

In the statistics “Visitor development for the central museums in 2022” new visitor figures are presented for the central museums, the Forum for living history and the visitor destinations for which the National Antiquities Authority is responsible. In total, information is presented on 32 of Sweden’s largest museums.
