visiting Prime Minister Narendra Modi visits Egypt

Indian leader Narendra Modi is visiting Egypt, where he is meeting President Abdel Fattah al-Sissi this Sunday, June 25. The stakes are high for both countries. India wants to boost its exports to North Africa while Egypt seeks to join the Brics group of developing countries.

After Washington, Narendra Modi landed this Saturday in Cairo for a new state visit. It has been twenty-seven years since an Indian Prime Minister has been there. On the program: meeting with the Indian diaspora, the Grand Mufti of Egypt at the historic Al-Hakim mosque, the Prime Minister and President al-Sissi.

Very close at the time of the non-aligned movement, Nehru and Nasser, India and Egypt want to relaunch their commercial and diplomatic relations. This visit comes after that of al-Sissi in India, during the national holiday, in January.

Egypt wants to integrate the Brics

On the Egyptian side, we hope in particular for the support of India in order to join the economic club of the Brics which brings together Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. India could support this candidacy, worried about that of Pakistan, its sworn enemy supported by China.

India wants to strengthen its presence in Egypt, North Africa’s leading economy, particularly in the infrastructure, energy and agri-food sectors. Since the war in Ukraine, India has become a supplier of wheat to Egypt.
