Visa and Mastercard are preparing to increase credit card fees

(Finance) – According to the Wall Street Journal Visa And MasterCard are preparing an increase in commissions which many merchants pay when accepting customers’ credit cards. The increases, claims the New York daily, should start between October and April and would mainly concern the acquisitions online. The increased fees should cost ai Merchants until 502 million dollars per year more. Total commissions paid by commercial businesses were $93 billion in 2022, nearly triple those in 2012, according to Nilson Report data

Visa, Mastercard and the big banks have explained that the commissions are used to cover the costs related toinnovation and to prevention of fraud. Today, the shares of Visa gain 0.6%, that of Mastercard about 1%.
