One person shot dead, at least 200 injured and 100 arrested are the results of the protests in Kenya so far.
The demonstrations are not only taking place in Nairobi and unrest has been reported from several parts of the country. According to the news agency, demonstrations have broken out in 19 of the country’s 47 regions.
Financial burden
The demonstrators are protesting against the proposed tax increases on, among other things, cooking oil and fuel.
The tax increases had imposed a financial burden on already hard-pressed Kenyans, say the protesters, who believe that the country’s President William Ruto is breaking his election promise to lower the cost of living for Kenyans.
Vote on the bill
The International Monetary Fund believes that the government needs to increase revenues to reduce the budget deficit and the government’s borrowing, writes Reuters.
Lawmakers are expected to meet on Tuesday to vote on changes to the bill, writes Reuters.
