Violent May Day protests in France

Over 100 police officers have been injured in the demonstrations in France, where hundreds of thousands of people have gathered in the streets of Paris and other major cities to protest against a higher retirement age.

“A total of at least 108 police officers have been injured in the clashes and 291 people have been arrested,” writes Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne on Twitter.

Shop windows have been smashed in both Paris and Nantes and Molotov cocktails have been thrown at the police, who are using both tear gas and water cannons.

Between 782,000 and 2.3 million people demonstrate – figures vary.
