A violent mass crash darkened the mood in the road cycling tour of the Basque Country on Thursday. Several of the cyclists involved in the accident fell into a concrete-covered ditch at the bend.

Two-time Tour de France winner, Denmark Jonas Vingegaard was carried from the accident scene on a stretcher to an ambulance and hospital treatment.

Vingegaard’s team later said that the driver was conscious after the accident. Doctors treated Vingegard at the crash site for a long time.

Belgium Remco Evenepoel left the place on foot, although he too had to be hospitalized. Slovene Primoz Roglic was injured, but apparently survived without serious injuries.

The accident happened on the fourth stage of the race from Etxarri-Aranatz to Legutio.

Roglic led the race by seven seconds to Evenepoel after the third stage. Vingegaard was fifth in the race. Finland Jaakko Hänninen was ranked 136.
