In Cameroon, several attacks took place this Tuesday, September 6 in the English-speaking part of the country. Violence in the middle of the back-to-school week, when certain separatist factions refuse to see students return to class. While in some parts of the North West and South West children have been able to return to class as in the rest of the country, in others parents are too afraid to let their children go out.
The most striking attack took place yesterday Tuesday in the South West region. In Muyuka, on the road between Kumba and Buea, armed men fired on a minibus carrying 14 civilians.
According to the government, the attack left six people dead, including the driver and passengers, and eight injured. All were transported to the regional hospital in Buea. The Minister of Communication denounced a ” cowardly and dastardly attack “perpetrated” in order to sow terror ” and ” jeopardize the start of the school year “.
Another incident to report, this time in Bamenda III, in the capital of the neighboring North West region. Two residents were wounded by bullets on Tuesday in the early afternoon. Their lives would not be in danger.
Lots of empty schools
Where the violence took place, schools remained empty on Wednesday. Thus, while in certain areas of the North-West and South-West regions, the start of the school year was able to take place on Tuesday after the ghost day Monday. In other areas, some separatists only tolerate resumption in schools deemed to be consistent with their ideology. Elsewhere, they refuse any return to class.
For the moment, the Cameroonian authorities in Yaoundé have not yet communicated on this violence.
