violence against deputies worry as the presidential election approaches

In France, the list of deputies victims of violence is growing. On Saturday January 22 in Perpignan, a city in the south of France, it was the deputy of La République en Marche Romain Grau who was attacked by anti-vaccination pass demonstrators.

The scene takes place in front of Romain Grau’s office in Perpignan. Several dozen anti-vaccine pass demonstrators take the deputy to task, threaten him with death. He receives a punch on the chin before being exfiltrated.

Violated, victims of degradation of their permanence or their home, insulted, threatened with death: the deputies are increasingly targeted, in particular the support of the Head of State. Like Stéphane Claireaux, attacked outside his home ten days ago in Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon.

The Ministry of the Interior has taken stock: in 2020, 60 parliamentarians were victims of physical violence, there were more than 160 the previous year and this new year is off to a bad start.

The violence against mayors and local elected officials are also increasing. the phenomenon has grown under the five-year term of Emmanuel Macron from the Yellow Vests movement. However, it has accelerated since the pandemic and the implementation of the health pass.

The deleterious climate worries the entire political class as the presidential election approaches. This while the campaign has already been peppered with violence, especially a month ago during the first meeting of far-right candidate Éric Zemmour.
