A summer of monthly vintage car gatherings in Point Edward’s Waterfront Park, next to the Blue Water Bridge, kicks off Friday.

Vintage in the Village is set to run from 5 to 8 pm

Village council set aside funding this year for a music series in the park, which led to exploring including car shows, said chief administrator Jim Burns.

“It would be the last Friday of each month, and we’ll partner with a different charity each month,” he said. “We thought we’d try this and see what happens.”

Similar events are being planned for the last Friday in June, July 26 and in August.

The Inn of the Good Shepherd will collect non-perishable food donations and run a 50-50 draw at Friday’s inaugural event.

Plans are to have live local music at the events through the summer, with a DJ providing music at Friday’s launch, Burns said.

“Any car enthusiasts are welcome,” he said. “Helping us organize is the Sarnia Street Cruisers, but you don’t have to be a member of their group.”

“We’ll have people down there directing cars,” Burns said. “We just need the weather to co-operate.”

The aim of the monthly summer events is to “support businesses and draw a few more people into the village,” Burns said. “We hope people will come down and see what kinds of things we have here, and come back later on and support the businesses.”

Previously, the village hosted a seasonal weekly outdoor farmers market in the park for about five years.

“It was fairly successful while it lasted,” Burns said.

After pausing due to the pandemic, the evening market resumed in summer 2022.

“It didn’t get a good turnover of vendors or shoppers, and then we didn’t do it last year,” Burns said.

The village hasn’t ruled out bringing the market back at some point, he said.
