Vin Diesels greatest sci fi spectacle that flopped badly

Vin Diesel has skeletons in his closet. We’re not talking about Dwayne Johnson doppelgangers, but rather various unfinished franchises: a total of 4 sci-fi and fantasy universes are waiting for sequels. This also includes the Riddick series, which reached its most epic proportions with Riddick: Chronicles of a Warrior – and failed. The still entertaining action spectacle still exists on Netflix until December 2, 2024 to see.

Only briefly on Netflix: Riddick was Vin Diesel’s attempt at a sci-fi epic

After various successes in the early 2000s, Diesel was eager to expand his Hollywood portfolio. He was let Thanks to box office hits like Fast & Furious and xXx. And apparently his producer’s attention was on a sequel to the critical success Pitch Black – Planet of Darkness.

That made perfect sense, because elite killer Riddick seems to be just as perfect as the main character of an action franchise and the sci-fi universe surrounding him could be expanded. Only Everything should be a bit bigger in the sequel. That’s how it happened.

In Riddick – Chronicles of a Warrior, Riddick takes on the stylish, fascist conqueror race of the Necromongers and hops across several planets in the process. For the The villains’ campaign of destruction and Vin Diesel’s stabbings, a pompous CGI fireworks display is set off.

Acting luminaries like Judi Dench also appear, and why not? The budget of $105 million (via Box Office Mojo) was up from its predecessor’s $23 million (via Box Office Mojo). yes, more than quadrupled.

Unfortunately, much of the excitement of the much more compact predecessor fell by the wayside. Dialogues and character drawing seem thinly applied, like too little Nutella on too much bread. Action fans will get their money’s worth thanks to the fight scenes and creative production design, but that’s not enough as a flagpole for an epic sci-fi franchise.

It’s true what the Rotten Tomatoes consensus says about the film: “As an action film offers [er] has some thrills, but as a sequel to Pitch Black it’s a disappointment.

The subsequent flop of the sci-fi epic at the box office also meant that the successor Riddick had to bake significantly smaller rolls. Chronicles of a Warrior may also be responsible for why fans have been on it for so long a fourth part of the series have to wait.
