Viktor Gyökeres is Sweden’s best soccer player this year.
Now the goalscoring striker is praised in unison after he was awarded the Ballon d’Or.

For the first time ever, it’s the striker Viktor Gyökeres26, who receives the Swedish Football Association’s and Aftonbladet’s Guldbollen award. He has had an absolutely incredible 2024 and scored more goals than any Swede has ever scored in one and the same calendar year. In the Nations League alone, he has scored nine goals for Sweden this year.

The Sporting Lisbon striker has accounted for an incredible 61 goals so far this year. That’s a crazy number! Only three players in the 2000s have scored more goals than Gyökeres in the same calendar year: Lionel Messi (91 goals in 2012), Cristiano Ronaldo (69 goals in 2013) and Robert Lewandowski (69 goals in 2021). Gyökeres also has three games left before the turn of the year.
– I don’t play in the Premier League like some others do, but I have done my absolute best where I am. And I think I proved myself in Europe as well, in the Champions League. And with the national team. So it’s not “only” in Portugal, he himself tells Sportbladet.

The jury’s reasoning reads:
“Viktor Gyökeres receives the golden ball for his efforts in the club team Sporting CP and the national team. There is nothing more difficult in football than scoring goals and winning titles, and no one has made it look easier than Viktor Gyökeres. With hard work and unique qualities, he has become an attacking leader for both the national team and Sporting, and a sought-after superstar in Europe”.

If you look at what the Swedish people think, basically everyone seems to agree that the jury chose the right player this year. The comments are pouring in on Sportbladet’s Instagram account. Everyone says the same thing.
“Obviously choice. Wasn’t any clearer after Zlatan,” comments one person.
“Magic striker that we need in the national team,” writes another.
“Obviously”, one writes briefly.
“Everything else had been a joke. One of the world’s absolute best players right now,” comments a fourth.

Gyökeres himself is both grateful and happy about the win. He says that his goal was to win the award as Sweden’s best soccer player.
– It feels both incredibly good and a little surreal. It’s something you might not have thought you’d become, but it’s clear that my goal was to win this award, he says.
Big congratulations to you, Viktor. You have had an incredible year both in the national team and in the club team. Hope your 2025 will be at least as good.
