VigilanS, a system for preventing repeat suicide attempts

The fight against the tiger mosquito in France

The objective of the VigilanS system is to reduce the risk of a repeat suicide attempt, by establishing a telephone link – and sometimes by postcard – during the six months following the persons concerned’s discharge from hospital. According to a recently published study, carried out by Public Health France, this program is effective: the risk of recurrence drops by almost 40% among people who have benefited from such support in the 12 months following their suicide attempt, compared to those who have not benefited from it.

France has a suicide rate higher than the average of other European countries; 200,000 suicide attempts per year, 9,200 deaths by suicide per year.
