A player from Jyväskylä paid a high price when he forgot a special rule related to the fast game format of snooker.

JYVÄSKYLÄ. The SC week, known as the gathering times of sports, has been organized since 2016. This year, a new sport was added to the event held in Jyväskylä, when snooker players competed for SC medals in a fast shootout game format.

In regular snooker, the duration of sets and matches is not limited, but in shootout, the struggle lasts only 10 minutes. The winner is the one of the two players who scores more points.

In addition to this, the shootout has a few other unusual rules.

One such player has only 15 seconds at the start of the match to complete each stroke. This is how the first five minutes go. With the last hit, the hitting time is reduced to 10 seconds. As a result, the players do not have the time to change their shot selection or, for example, to perform their aim again.

In addition, as a special rule, for every mistake made by a player, the opponent gets a free handball – so the opponent can start his turn by placing the white cue ball with his hand anywhere on the table. And unlike snooker in general, every safety shot requires one of the balls on the table to hit the wall.

Saturday from Jyväskylä Esa Oikarinen and from Turku Toni Savonen the SM final of the shootout between

Oikarinen, the more experienced and successful of the two, forgot the required wall contact when hitting a safety shot, and Savonen broke the lead with a series of shots he made from the handball, which Oikarinen did not manage to close.

– It was a bit bad for Esa that she forgot the rampart rule. I was a little out before that, but I was lucky enough to join.

– This was the first big victory. I am very satisfied, Savonen said.

The decisive rule confusion was preceded by Oikarinen’s lucky pocketing of the red ball, which he would not have realized without the help of the crowd. Oikarinen, who was on his way to his seat, confusedly rushed to hit the black ball.

– That situation completely messed things up. I didn’t realize at all what I was doing or how much hitting time was left, Oikarinen said.

A special environment

For snooker players, Jyväskylä’s Hipposhalli was the place to play during the Championship week. The table and the stands surrounding it were built in the middle of the hall. All around, there was a fight for SC medals in, among other things, archery, taekwondo, kettlebell and arm wrestling.

As an environment, the hall was far from quiet arcades.

– I liked this event so much that the failure of the final didn’t leave even that much of a dent in my teeth. I enjoyed being able to play all seven possible games. I hope this Shootout will be in the program of the SM week in the future, Oikarinen said.

The master shared Oikarinen’s view.

– The setting was really great. It was nice to be able to watch other sports as well. The shootout format is crowd-friendly and offers snooker a nice additional element, Savonen said.
