Victory in tears: “No more European Championships”

Sweden’s football EC in England is over after the home team overcame Blågult 4–0 in the semi-finals at Bramall Lane in Sheffield.

The disappointment among veterans Caroline Seger and Hedvig Lindahl, who may have both played their last national team match, was clear. Among other things, England scored three goals in 28 minutes in the second half.

— We get those goals against us and it becomes heavy. We get a little lesson today on how fast it goes and how sharp they are in the box. It drags on way too much, says team captain and midfielder Caroline Seger to C More.

Goalkeeper Hedvig Lindahl to Radiosporten:

— I’m empty. Disappointed. We wanted more. It felt like we were in the game well after the first half so it felt so stupid when they conceded 2-0.

Lindahl was tunneled when Alessia Russo made it 3–0 with a heel and was lobbed when Fran Kirby lifted to make it 4–0.

— Of course the third and fourth are not so funny. 2-0 (Lucy Bronze) is very annoying. Then we have to score from corners but we don’t manage to do that.

37-year-old Seger was injured for much of the championship and was substituted at 0–2 down in the 51st minute of the semi, following Beth Mead’s 1–0 goal in the first half and Bronze’s 2–0 goal at the start of Other.

Seger received questions about her national team future after the match. The World Cup in Australia and New Zealand begins on July 20 next year.

— I don’t know that yet. It’s not something I want to address now or answer. No more European Championships in any case, she tells C More.

England will face France or Germany in the European Championship final at Wembley in London on Sunday.
