Foreign Ministry employees, as well as their families who were injured as a result of the incident at the US Embassy in the Cuban capital Havana, may receive financial compensation of between 100,000 and 200,000 dollars, corresponding to just over one to two million kronor. An official statement is expected next week.
Following what happened in Havana, similar cases of headaches, nausea and possible brain damage have occurred among diplomats and intelligence personnel in Australia, Austria, China, Germany and Russia, among others.
However, what lies behind the Havana syndrome is still shrouded in obscurity. A US panel said earlier this year that pulsating electromagnetic energy and close-up ultrasound could cause the unusual combination of symptoms officially referred to as abnormal health incidents (AHI).
