After briefly typing on her computer, vet Mirthe Roerdonk shows a photo. “Look,” she says. “This is a pug skull, and this is a dog with a long snout.” The difference is immediately clear, she sees from the large overbite of the pug. “Those short snouts are so bred that their skulls are in fact too small for what’s in it. And that ensures that they are almost never pain-free.”
