Bill Finlay, a retired Canadian Armed Forces captain and RCMP officer, said, “It’s a remembrance type ceremony” to which the public is welcome to help honor Canadian Forces’ members locally and Canada-wide, who serve or have served the country during war and peacekeeping.

“This event is interesting and open to all, especially those wishing to become cadets, those interested in history, those who have veterans in their families and those who wish to pay tribute to those who have sacrificed their lives for others,” Finlay said.

The memorial will include a mounted horse unit wearing First World War uniforms along with a firing party with authentic First World War weapons. There will also be members of the local air cadet squadron.

Finlay will reflect on the military service of Canadians and the sacrifices made for the freedoms enjoyed today.

There will be a silent walk through the small cemetery and flags will be available for people to place at the gravestones of veteran and others.

Finlay led the way to having the memorial at the area cemetery. When he was stationed previously in London, Finlay said he used to organize a color party made up of an OPP officer, a marine, a firefighter and himself to participate in different ceremonies and services at cemeteries and cenotaphs.

Living in the Louisville area, he decided to approach the Arnold Cemetery board, of which he is a member, about doing a memorial event at the cemetery where a small number of military veterans are buried.

The memorial begins at 2 pm Sunday at Arnold Cemetery located at 10282 Longwoods Road, just west of Louisville.
